Frequently-anticipated questions:

What does this data set describe?

Title: Existing Landuse for York County, SC
Abstract:
The existing land use layer is a general approximation of the current land uses on each property across York County. It was developed using the dwelling type field in the addressing layer, parcel coverage, as well as general planning criteria. This layer does not specify the legal uses of each property and does not supersede zoning classifications or York County ordinance.

Why was the data set created?

To indicate the general current use of parcels for base mapping, landuse planning, and other purposes.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?

    Address (source 1 of 1)
Collaboration of several depart, City of Rock Hill, 2002, dptpln_address_base.

    Type_of_Source_Media: GIS layers
    Source_Contribution:
Address layer was collected via windshield tour of the entire county (excepting Rock Hill, York, Clover, Fort Mill, and Tega Cay) and entering address data for every structure. Among the data collected is 'dwelling type' which identifies a structure as being used for residential, business, government, industrial, church, school, etc.

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

Date: Unknown (process 1 of 3)
The data present in the address layer was collected via windshield tour of the entire county (excepting Rock Hill, York, Clover, Fort Mill, and Tega Cay) and entering address data for every structure. Among the data collected is 'dwelling type' which identifies a structure as being apartment, mobile home, residential, business, government, industrial, church, school, etc. The cadastral layer represents the tax parcels within the county, and was used to establish landuse boundaries. For example, if a building being addressed was determined to be a business, then the parcel upon which the building rested was assigned 'commercial' use for landuse purposes. Similarly, a dwelling type of 'apartment' was assigned a landuse of 'Residential'. When adjacent parcels were assigned the same landuse then one polygon was created to represent those like-designated parcels.

  3. What similar or related data should the user be aware of?

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?

  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?

  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?

The existing land use data does not necessarily represent 100% coverage, and there may be gaps not explained by the circumstances presented in the "Logical Consistency Report".

  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?

No topology has been created for this layer as of the date the metadata was created. Some generalization was used. There are some gaps in the coverage as the result of water bodies, city limits, etc.

How can someone get a copy of the data set?

Are there legal restrictions on access or use of the data?
